Sweden trip - Norrtbotten county

We travelled to Sweden for summer break. This is all about northern most county I visited in Sweden.

Norrbotten county is one of the 23 counties in Sweden . Did you know that it is the biggest county in Sweden? Lulea is the capital of this county. The municipalities I visited are Kiruna , Gallivare and Jokmokk. Did you know that Kiruna is one of the biggest cities? It is also the biggest iron ore mine in Europe. Did you know that Gallivare is also called the mining capital of Europe?

Interesting fact: The motorways (highways) in Sweden start with letter E, while in Germany it starts with letter A , USA it is I(interstates) and India it is NH (National Highways). Did you know that town or city is called locality. Sweden has municipalities instead of states

Places we visited in Norrbotten county We took a flight from Arlanda Stockholm airport to Lapland , Gallivare airport. The plane makes a stop at Arvidsjaur for 20 minutes first. Gallivare is also called the mining capital of Europe. It is a cute and small airport. We lived in my aunt’s house in Koskullskulle . It comes under Gallivare municipality.

Koskullskulle has lots of lakes and trails. Population of this locality is 824 as per 2010 census. It is one the smallest cities I have visited. Its size is 1.07 sq miles. Some of the houses here are actually moved from Kiruna and other places. These houses are more than 160 years old. My aunt lives in one of these houses. It was interesting to know how they moved the houses from the mining area for safety.

We drove from Koskullskulle to the Ice Hotel, Jukkasjärvi via E10. I saw the ice bed and the ice sculptures. The temperature in the hotel is -5° Celsius. Everything inside the hotel was made with ice. We wore special jackets to go inside the ice hotel. This is the first ice hotel opened in 1960.

Then we drove to Kiruna. We saw the welcome to Kiruna sign and sign to go to Norvik. Norvik is a city in norway. Kiruna is closest to Norway. Did you know that it has the largest iron ore? This is the northernmost point I visited.

We also went to the Arctic Circle at Jokkmokk, Sweden. Did you know that it is an imaginary line at 66.5° North and 33.5° east. It also crosses Norway, Finland , Russia, Alaska , Canada and Greenland .

On our way we saw Porjus Hydroelectric Power Station. It generates power even during winter when the river freezes.

Lastly we went to Mt Dundret. It is one of the mountains in this county. Did you know that it is the same height as the tallest building Bhurj Khalifa with 850m high? It is just outside Gallivare. It is a ski resort and there are a lot of trails.

I enjoyed exploring Norrbotten county. Did you know that this county is famous for reindeers? While I was taking a plane from Gallivare, I saw reindeers at the airport. I said “hej då” (Good bye) to Lapland airport.
