North West Angle, MN

Another interesting anomaly of US map  is North West Angle.  It comes under Minnesota state, USA.

About this point:

Northwest angle is "angle" is north west of the Lake woods in Minnesota. It is exactly north of 49th parallel. It is the only place north of 49th which forms the border of US and Canada. This is also US exclave.  NW angle is the northern most point of 48 contiguous US.  Contiguous states in USA are states that share borders, it doesn't include Alaska and Hawaii.  This land is surrounded by lake waters and Canada land on all sides.

Little information about border

Another interesting fact is that, due to misunderstood geography of the area, northwest angle became part of USA.  This was part of Treaty of Paris in 1783. As part of treaty, it was agreed that border would run from east coast to Mississippi river.. This was based on map from 1755 which showed lake woods smaller,  It was not until 1798 this error was found out by British explorer. Oh no! However the border was already established.

The Webster–Ashburton Treaty of 1842 reaffirmed this border and established the exact location of the northwesternmost point of the lake. The placement of the northwestern corner and shape of the lake is now known as the Northwest Angle.

How to get there:

To go there, you can drive and cross Canada border and back to USA. You can also take a boat on lake woods. You would need a valid passport to go there by boat or by road.
