Long beach trip

On Saturday we drove to long beach. We took state road 18, i5, us101, wa8 and us12. We went to the beach. We drove by the beach. It is the longest beach in the world.

We walked on the boardwalk on the beach on Sunday morning.  We also saw the skeleton of the gray whale discovered by Lewis.

We also saw Lewis and Clark park. They visited long beach in Nov 1805.  They observed all the mountains and volcanoes in the cascade range. Mt hood is the oldest mountain and Mt. St. Helens is the youngest volcano.

We went to Cape disappointment. It is the mouth of Columbia River joining Pacific Ocean.  We saw the light house from there.  There is Lewis and Clark Interpretive center.

And then we went to Lewis and Clark center. I learnt about Lewis and Clark expedition. Thomas Jefferson wrote letter to Lewis to find the path to Pacific Ocean. He wrote in the letter – “The object of the Mission – find Pacific Ocean”.  Lewis and Clark started from St. Louis in 1804 from Missouri river. They stopped at Fort Mandan, North Dakota for winter in 1804. They were joined by interpreters. Sacagawea joined them. They reached Rocky Mountains by 1805. It was very difficult journey to cross Rocky Mountains with heavy snow. They saw the yellow stone river in Montana. They finally reached Columbia River. They made a mistake that it was Pacific Ocean. They finally reached Pacific Ocean in November 1805. It took 18 months for expedition. They stayed there and learnt about the region. They finally reached home in 1806.

We also went to Fort Stevens State Park, Oregon. We drove to Oregon via Astoria-101 bridge. We saw the Columbia River. It was the other end of the cape disappointment. There is an observation deck at the park. Unfortunately it was closed due to construction when we went there.
